Every update

All 125 of them, newest first. The game updates itself when you open it.

  1. Version 0.19.31

    Cleaner low-poly faces

    • Human Body B's and Zombie Body B's low-poly faces are a few flat planes of clean skin, lit or in shadow, like our low-poly concept art, instead of patchy, muddy shading, and your skin colour drives every one of them.
    • Zombie Body B has his eyes and scowling brows back in low-poly. Human Body B stays faceless, as we drew him.
  2. Version 0.19.30

    Symmetrical low-poly faces

    • Human Body B's and Zombie Body B's low-poly faces are symmetrical now: each face is one clean half mirrored, so it no longer looks lopsided and rough, in every size and every style from far away. Their hair is left as we drew it, swept and spiky, and hats still sit right.
  3. Version 0.19.29

Low-poly characters that look like our concept art

    • Low-poly characters now look like our low-poly concept art, starting with Human Body B and Zombie Body B: in the low-poly style, and in every style from far away, they're now built from our own low-poly drawings, with big flat facets, clean flat colours, spiky, blocky hair and clean faces under the fringe, instead of a simplified copy of the anime model with its smudges and tears. Small and large sizes too.
    • Your colours look the same on them as on the anime model, and hats sit on top of their new hair.
    • A rabbit's long ears flop with a jump instead of whipping over its head at takeoff.
  4. Version 0.19.28

    Tails that keep their curl

    • A jump no longer flings a dog's curled tail straight up like a flame when it lands: tails, ears and ponytails bob with the hop and settle back in place.
  5. Version 0.19.27

Cleaner clothes on Human Body B

    • Cleaner clothes on Human Body B: his white T-shirt has lost the dark print scribbled across his chest, and the white flecks and smears on his jeans are gone, in every size and every style. His hair is a shade darker than before.
  6. Version 0.19.26

    Golden retrievers and gray wolves

    • Two new dog breeds, from our concept art: the golden retriever, with its long golden coat, feathered tail and soft ears that hang down, and the gray wolf, with tall pricked ears, a grey coat with a pale cream underside and a long bushy tail. Pick a breed on the Wardrobe's Look tab once you've picked Dog.
    • Each breed is its own size: a retriever stands a head taller than a Shiba, and a wolf taller still, in every size and every style. A wolf carries its head forward, a retriever its long head on a short neck.
    • A breed starts out in its own coat, as we drew it, and you can recolor it like anyone else. Hats and crowns fit every breed, and your weapon floats at your shoulder whatever dog you are.
  7. Version 0.19.25

    Cleaner clothes

    • Human Body A's, both Wood Elves' and both Dark Elves' clothes are cleaner: the stains and smudges on their shirts and jeans are gone, most of all in low-poly. Zombie Body B's shirt has fewer tears across his back.
  8. Version 0.19.24

    Shibas

    • The dogs are Shibas now, from our concept art: a bright orange coat with cream markings on the chest, cheeks and paws, a big fluffy tail curled over the back and pricked ears, in every size and every style. A small one is a round-headed pup, a large one a big, fluffy dog.
    • A dog starts out in the Shiba's own orange and cream, and you can recolor it like anyone else. Hats and crowns sit between its ears, and its weapon still floats at its shoulder.
  9. Version 0.19.23

    Dogs are real dogs

    • Dogs are real dogs now: four legs, a curled tail and pricked ears that twitch as they run, in every size and every style. Pick Dog on the Wardrobe's Look tab and you start as a Shiba in its red coat and cream markings (recolor it like anyone else). More breeds are on the way.
    • A dog has no hands, so its weapon floats beside it. It bobs along at your shoulder, swings down past your nose as you bite, slams with your dig, swings round to aim as you bark and rises over your head as you howl. Your shield floats on the other side and comes up when you bow down to block. Arrows fly from the floating bow, spells from the staff, and every weapon look you've earned still shows.
    • Every hat and crown fits a dog, between its ears.
    • Dogs climb monsters too: they cling to the hide right beside the weak point, with their weapon riding on their back.
    • Pip is a Shiba now, sitting up on the counter of Pip's Produce in a sunflower hat and turning to watch you walk by.
  10. Version 0.19.22

    Zombies

    • A new race: the Zombie. Pick it on the Wardrobe's Look tab, then Body A or Body B, in any size and any style. Zombies have pale grey skin, white hair and bright red or orange eyes, and wear a red T-shirt, jeans and sneakers, made from our concept art.
    • A zombie starts out in its pale grey skin and white hair, as we drew it, and you can recolor it like anyone else. Hats and crowns fit it too.
  11. Version 0.19.21

    Clear air around you

    • In Kauaʻi's thickest mist, a little pocket of clear air now moves with you, so you and your name stay easy to see while the world past a few steps goes white.
    • A team attack's big gold number now stays on screen even when the hit lands near the edge, so you always see the moment's name.
  12. Version 0.19.20

    Cleaner jeans

    • The Human's body B wears clean jeans now: the pale tears and brown smears are gone in every style, and his white T-shirt is evenly white under your colours. (The mark across his chest is next.)
  13. Version 0.19.19

    Worlds from a file

    • Community worlds can now look like anything, not just Friend's Island. A world is one file that lists its sky, its ground, the trees, houses, booths, lanterns and crops it's built from, and what you can do there (signs, seats, shells to find, sounds), and the world sends it to you when you arrive. Every piece already comes in pixel, low-poly and anime.
    • Friend's Island is the first world made this way, and it looks just as it did. We also made a sample any host can run: the Lantern Market, a golden-hour festival lane of booths under strings of paper lanterns, with a garden, benches to sit on and four shells hidden around it.
    • Hosting your own world? --world picks its file, and the server checks it first, telling you exactly what to fix (a piece we don't have, too many pieces, a word our filter blocks).
  14. Version 0.19.18

    Mist on Kauaʻi

    • Kauaʻi has real mist now, where the island really has it. A cloud sits on the summit plateau, a bank lies low in Waimea Canyon, and sea mist climbs the Nā Pali cliffs and fills the far end of the Kalalau trail. You can see the banks from a ridge away, then walk in until the world goes soft and white. They drift. The rest of the island stays sunny.
  15. Version 0.19.17

    Tidier panels

    • When you open a panel (the Hunt Board, Pip's, the menu), the Getting Started and Today cards and the controls strip step aside instead of peeking out around its edges. They slide back when you close it.
  16. Version 0.19.16

    Smoother on big screens

    • A new Auto render scale, now the default: on big high-resolution screens (a Retina laptop's, say) the 3D world is drawn at about 2560×1600 and scaled up, while the text and menus stay sharp. On an M5 MacBook that took Kauaʻi from about 28 to about 42 frames a second. Smaller windows look exactly as before.
    • Prefer every pixel? Settings → Display → Render scale → 100%.
  17. Version 0.19.15

    Notes without GitHub

    • Notes from the I key now reach us even without a GitHub login: they go through our server, screenshot and all. Up to five an hour, which is plenty.
  18. Version 0.19.14

    Who's online says what's wrong

    • If the server can't list who's online, the list now tells you why and keeps trying every few seconds, instead of saying "Looking…" forever.
  19. Version 0.19.13

    Notes from the game

    • Press I anywhere in the game to send a note to the team: the game takes a screenshot of the moment, you write what you saw, and it's filed for the developers with your system's details (frame rate, graphics, how busy your computer is). You stay in the game while it sends.
    • For now it files through your GitHub login, the same one updates use. Without it, the note and screenshot are saved on your computer and the box tells you where.
  20. Version 0.19.12

    Jump, look, zoom

    • In hunts and on the expedition, Space jumps when you're not in a fight, the same jump as in the plaza. When a monster's after you or you've just been fighting, it dodges as before.
    • The mouse looks around reliably in hunts: it no longer gets stuck when the game opens behind another window or you click on a panel, and coming back to the game window picks it up again.
    • The mouse wheel zooms in and out in hunts again, and on a trackpad two fingers or a pinch zoom too.
  21. Version 0.19.11

    Weapons away

    • New on the Hunt Board, as a prototype: the Kauaʻi Expedition. Land on a fogged-in beach, follow tracks, a glow and your party's calls through the jungle, and find the Lanternhorn before it finds you. Press M for the map, which fills in as you explore.
    • Out of a fight, your weapon and shield now ride on your back. Your hero reaches over a shoulder to put them away, and draws them as soon as a monster comes for you or you swing. Called-up friends do the same.
    • The up and down arrow keys now tilt the camera, as left and right turn it, and you can look higher than before (up at the trees, or a monster's head).
  22. Version 0.19.10

    Dark Elves

    • A new race: the Dark Elf. Pick it on the Wardrobe's Look tab, then Body A or Body B, in any size and any style. Dark elves have grey skin, white hair and long pointed ears, and wear the same everyday clothes as the other new folks: a T-shirt, jeans and sneakers, made from our concept art.
    • A dark elf starts out in grey skin and pale hair, as we drew it, and you can recolor it like anyone else. Hats and crowns sit between its ears.
  23. Version 0.19.9

    Low-poly that matches

    • Low-poly humans, elves and rabbits are now made from the same finished model as the anime style, so they keep its hair, faces and shirt prints instead of a rougher copy, and every fix we make shows up in both.
    • Jeans have far fewer skin-colored rips and brown smudges, in every style.
  24. Version 0.19.8

    Cleaner low-poly humans

    • In the low-poly style, the humans' jeans had skin-colored rips and dark smudges that picked up your skin and hair colors, and one body had a grey shard floating over its hair. The jeans are clean denim now, and the shard is gone.
  25. Version 0.19.7

    Small rabbits too

    • Small rabbits get the same fix: a smaller head, so their ears and face sit on their shoulders like everyone else's instead of towering over them.
  26. Version 0.19.6

    Adventure with friends

    • The title screen has a new line under WORLDSTART: "Adventure with friends, build the world."
  27. Version 0.19.5

    Smaller heads for small folks

    • Small Humans and Wood Elves had heads (and hair) nearly as wide as their shoulders. Their heads are now about two thirds the size, so a small character reads as a short person, closer to our concept art, instead of a bobblehead.
  28. Version 0.19.4

    Wood Elves

    • A new race: the Wood Elf. Pick it on the Wardrobe's Look tab, then Body A or Body B, in any size and any style. Elves have long pointed ears and wear everyday clothes: a T-shirt, jeans and sneakers, made from our concept art like the new humans.
    • Your colors tint the elf in every style, and hats and crowns sit on its head with the ears poking out underneath.
  29. Version 0.19.3

    Eyes front

    • The new humans look where they're facing now. Their heads were turned off to one side, so they seemed to ignore whoever they stood next to; now they face you, and hats sit straight on them.
    • Body B lost the pale tuft that floated on top of his hair.
  30. Version 0.19.2

    New humans, every size

    • Small and large Humans now wear the new models too, Body A or Body B. Small is a big-headed chibi, large is broad and tall, and both keep your colors and your hat.
    • The Wardrobe's Hair and Eye shape rows are gone for Humans, since the new models bring their own hair and eyes. Pick a Body instead.
  31. Version 0.19.1

    Quieter buttons

    • The orange is gone from menus and the HUD. Buttons, ready skills, checkboxes and switches are a clean warm white now, so the color on screen is the world and everyone in it.
  32. Version 0.19.0

    New humans

    • Every medium-size Human now wears a new, more detailed model made from our concept art, in everyday clothes: a T-shirt, jeans and sneakers. There are two to choose from, Body A and Body B, in a new Body row on the Wardrobe's Look tab. Your character starts as Body A.
    • Your colors still apply: skin, hair, outfit, legs and shoes all tint the new model, in every style.
    • Hats and crowns sit on the new model's own head, as they do on the new rabbit. Hairstyles and eye shapes don't change it yet (it has its own hair and eyes), outfits don't change, and small and large humans keep the older model for now. The Wardrobe says so where it matters.
  33. Version 0.18.8

    Hats on the new rabbit

    • Hats and crowns now show on the new rabbit. Every head cosmetic, from the Sunflower Hat to the OZ Halo, sits on its head at every size and in all three styles, with its ears poking through, and stays put when you run, jump and climb.
    • The Wardrobe's note on the new rabbit now says only what's still true: its outfit doesn't change.
  34. Version 0.18.7

    Thornback Meadow, trampled

    • You can see where the Thornback has been now. It ploughed a muddy swath through the turnip rows, left hoofprints and uprooted turnips behind, and smashed through the field fence into the meadow.
    • The meadow feels like a summer afternoon: warm light and longer shadows, drifts of wildflowers and tall swaying grass at the edges, cabbage whites over the turnips and swallows overhead.
    • The middle of the meadow stays flat, open and short-grassed, so you can still read every attack on the ground.
  35. Version 0.18.6

    What you're short

    • At Pip's, anything you can't afford yet is greyed out and says what's missing right on its row: "needs 40 more coins", "needs 2 more Lantern Shells". Hats and weapon looks too. Come back from a hunt with the panel open and the row lights up on its own.
    • The Market's Buy buttons do the same, and the campfire's Grill buttons light up as soon as you've caught something.
    • On a gamepad, the D-pad skips greyed-out buttons at Pip's, in the Market, at the campfire and in the seed picker, and buying or crafting keeps you where you were instead of dropping you back at the top.
    • Recipes count properly now: "5 lantern shells", not "5 lantern shell".
  36. Version 0.18.5

    Fishing feels like fishing

    • Your bobber flies out on a line and plops in, fish nibble before they bite, a bite pulls it under with a splash, and your catch splashes out of the pond with its name.
  37. Version 0.18.4

    The new rabbit, every size

    • Small and large Rabbits now wear the new rabbit model too, so every Rabbit looks the same family whatever its size. A small one is a chibi with a big head and long ears, short legs dangling off the bench. A large one is tall and broad and sits with its knees up. Your colors still apply, and outfits and hats still don't show on it yet.
  38. Version 0.18.3

    Mossy cliffs

    • Kauaʻi's cliffs and steep hillsides look like real mossy rock now: we got rid of the repeating crack pattern and the washed-out grey on walls that face at an angle.
  39. Version 0.18.2

A summer afternoon on the farm

    • Your farm feels lived in now. Butterflies drift over the flowers, dragonflies hover over the pond, the water ripples now and then, and the campfire flickers and spits embers. Crickets hum softly under the music, and sunflowers stand either side of your door.
    • With Reduce flashing on, the campfire glows steadily instead of flickering.
  40. Version 0.18.1

    A clearer entrance

    • When a hunt starts, the monster's name now sits on a dark band across the screen, with where you are above it, so it reads over a sunny meadow as well as at dusk.
    • Your call-ups wait for the title to clear before they shout their opening line.
  41. Version 0.18.0

    Weapon looks

    • Your weapon can show off now. The sword, great sword, bow, staff, baseball bat and shield each have three new looks: longer blades and teal gems, a broader great sword, steel-sleeved bows, staffs that sprout leaves, bats wound with grip tape, and shields banded in steel and teal.
    • Craft them at Pip's from what you bring back from hunts: Thornback scales for blades and shields, Lanternhorn shells for bows, staffs and bats. Tier 1 takes a hunt or two, and each tier unlocks the next.
    • Pick a look in the Wardrobe's Gear tab. Looks change nothing about how a weapon fights. Everyone sees yours, in every style, in your hands and on your back when you climb.
  42. Version 0.17.7

    Bounties, posted

    • The bounty post on your farm finally says what it is: a BOUNTIES header and a few notes pinned up. Post one there and the hunters who fell the Thornback split your coins.
  43. Version 0.17.6

    Who's resting

    • The "resting · call up" line under a call-up's name is a size bigger with a firmer edge, so you can read it against the plaza's bright floor without walking right up.
  44. Version 0.17.5

    Hunting Grounds

    • The hunt portal in Start Plaza is now signed Hunting Grounds, one tidy line like its neighbors, instead of two labels stacked on its rim.
  45. Version 0.17.4

    Names you can read

    • Names over people's heads now stand clear of them: a rabbit's ears or a tall hat no longer cut through a name, and the "resting · call up" line under a call-up's name isn't hidden behind their head any more. Chat bubbles sit above the name instead of on top of it.
  46. Version 0.17.3

    The new rabbit for everyone

    • Every medium-size Rabbit now wears the new, more detailed rabbit made from our concept art, standing up on its toes. It used to hide behind a setting. Your colors still apply. Outfits and hats don't show on it yet, and small and large rabbits keep the older model for now.
    • Settings no longer has a Prototypes section. More models drawn from our artists' concepts will replace the older ones as they're ready.
  47. Version 0.17.2

    Tree ferns, bananas and lehua

    • Kauaʻi grows three more of its own plants. Hāpuʻu tree ferns crowd the rainforest streams up in the hills, banana clumps stand on the river banks down in the valleys, and ʻōhiʻa trees, red with lehua blossom, dot the slopes and the summit. You'll see a few in bloom from where you arrive.
  48. Version 0.17.1

    Summit mist

    • Climb toward Kauaʻi's summit and the mist closes in, the way it does on Waiʻaleʻale: what's near stays sharp, the distance goes soft. The beaches and valleys stay clear and sunny.
    • The island runs lighter: grass grows where you can see it (in the meadows, not under the jungle's ferns), and the sun's shadows focus on what's near you.
  49. Version 0.17.0

    Summer crops

    • Your farm grows more than turnips now. Pip sells four new seeds: - Tomatoes (12 coins) ripen in 90 seconds watered. A quick crop for a short visit, and the best heal in a hunt: 35%. - Corn (15 coins) takes 4 minutes watered and sells for 50. Eat it in a hunt to refill your stamina and get a Sugar Rush: stamina comes back twice as fast, and climbing a monster tires you half as quickly, for 30 seconds. - Sunflowers (8 coins) grow on sunshine alone. No watering, ripe in two and a half minutes. - Watermelons (40 coins) take 30 minutes watered, or an hour and a half without. Plant one, go hunt, come back to Pip's best price: 220 coins.
    • Nothing wilts. A crop you leave for a day, or a week, is still ripe and still worth the same.
    • A seed picker when you plant: click a seed, use the D-pad and A on a gamepad, or press 1–5. If you only have one kind of seed, it just plants it.
    • Every crop has its own look as it grows, in all three styles: staked tomato bushes, corn taller than you, sunflowers that turn their faces to you, and watermelons that swell out of their vines.
    • Two new looks at Pip's tailoring: the Sunflower Crown (six sunflowers) and the Watermelon Hat (two watermelons). Both work on every race and in every style.
    • The eat key picks the right snack: grilled fish first, corn when you're winded, a tomato when you're badly hurt, a turnip otherwise.
    • A new chore can turn up on your Today card: harvest a tomato.
  50. Version 0.16.13

    Grip and swish

    • Grabbing onto a monster lands with a thump, and letting go draws your weapon with a swish.
  51. Version 0.16.12

    Render scale

    • New in Settings: Render scale. Draw the world at 85% or 75% and upscale it, for a smoother game on a big screen or a busy laptop. Menus and text stay sharp. 100% is the default.
  52. Version 0.16.11

    Kauaʻi runs smoother

    • Kauaʻi runs smoother: the island draws only the grass in front of you, skips the near-camera leaf fade on plants away from you, and plays only the waterfalls you can hear. It looks and sounds the same, at about 13% less time per frame and a tenth of the scene's nodes.
    • Graphics: Low now smooths edges with FXAA instead of MSAA, which on a high-resolution screen makes Kauaʻi about a third faster than before on Low.
  53. Version 0.16.10

    A tabard, not webbing

    • The generated rabbit (Settings → Prototypes) keeps its tabard in one piece when it runs, sprints or jumps. The front panel swings with the leg it hangs over, where before it stretched between both legs like webbing.
  54. Version 0.16.9

Hand to back, and team attacks for every size

    • Grabbing onto a monster, you reach over your shoulder and put your weapon on your back as your other hand takes hold; your shield slings round behind it. Letting go, you draw it again on the way down and land ready. No more weapons jumping between hand and back on their own.
    • Team attacks fit whoever's in them, small, medium or large. Launches, springboards and bat swings meet where the bodies actually are: a small Warrior holds its shield low, and a turnip is teed up where a small Normie can reach it.
    • In Sunshower and High Dive the bigger partner braces. A large Ranger boosts a small Warrior skyward to dive sword-first onto the monster's back while the arrows fly, instead of vaulting off a tiny shield.
  55. Version 0.16.8

    A proper entrance

    • A monster's title card gets the screen to itself: tips wait, and team attacks hold off until it's gone.
  56. Version 0.16.7

    Palms, monkeypods and orchids

    • Coconut palms line Kauaʻi's beaches and river mouths, tall and leaning the way they do in Waikīkī.
    • A few great monkeypod trees spread their shade over the open lowlands. Walk under one.
    • Loulu fan palms on the misty slopes, red kī along the trails and streams, purple orchids by the pools, and round dubautia shrubs on the summit bog.
  57. Version 0.16.6

    Clear first looks

    • Arriving at your Home Farm or a community world, you see the place, not the inside of the portal ring: the way back now stands off to your right, facing you.
    • Community worlds keep palm trees out of your first view.
    • The full list of hunt controls shows on your first hunt only, and tucks itself away after 20 seconds. Press H any time to bring it back.
  58. Version 0.16.5

    Climbing that looks like climbing

    • Climbing a monster now looks the part: your weapon goes on your back, and you hang on with both hands, feet braced against its hide. Steer while you're on it to edge around the weak point hand over hand.
    • Striking while you climb draws your weapon over your shoulder and drives it down into the weak point. The hit lands as the blade goes in, then the weapon goes back on your back.
    • Works for every size, from small to large, and for every weapon: greatswords, staffs and bows ride across your back, twin blades cross, and a shield goes on behind them.
  59. Version 0.16.4

    Start on Kauaʻi

    • A brand-new character now starts on Kauaʻi, like everyone else, and walks through the Start ring into Start Plaza.
    • The title screen says "Heading to Kauaʻi…" while the island grows its jungle, instead of sitting still.
  60. Version 0.16.3

    Big skies

    • Puffy trade-wind clouds over Kauaʻi, and a soft cloud cap drifting round the summit, the way Waiʻaleʻale nearly always wears one.
    • White tropicbirds glide over the canyons, the tallest waterfalls and the bays.
  61. Version 0.16.2

    Trails

    • Four footpaths of worn red earth to follow across Kauaʻi: the Kalalau Trail along the north, a trail up Waimea Canyon to its tallest falls, the Summit Trail from the Wailua River, and the Alakaʻi Crossing over the top.
    • Where a trail meets a river, there's a shallow gravel ford to splash across.
    • Rivers and pools are now about waist-deep at most, so even the smallest characters can wade them.
  62. Version 0.16.1

    Places to find

    • Kauaʻi has 17 places to find: the summit, Waimea Canyon, the Nā Pali cliffs, Hanalei Bay, the river mouths and the tallest waterfalls. Reach one and you'll get a little note. The island remembers what you've found.
  63. Version 0.16.0

    Kauaʻi

    • The island you start on is now Kauaʻi: the real island's mountains, canyons and coastline, shrunk down so you can run across it in a few minutes.
    • Rivers wind down every valley to the sea, with dozens of waterfalls, cool plunge pools you can wade into, and a reef lagoon off the beaches.
    • It's lush: tall grass that sways in the wind, ferns and big-leaf plants under the trees, and forest all the way up the ridges. Listen for the waterfalls, the streams and the surf as you get close.
    • You arrive looking at a waterfall through the Start ring. Explore as long as you like, then step through to log in.
  64. Version 0.15.1

    Sharper menus

    • A new interface typeface, Inter Tight: crisper and easier to read, in menus, the HUD and nameplates. Panel titles use it too; the Worldstart logo, hunt banners and the plaza's signs keep their storybook letters.
    • Buttons and panels are sharper: tighter corners, thin clean edges and softer shadows. The main action on each screen is the orange button; everything else is quieter.
    • With a keyboard or gamepad, the button you're on now has a thin bright ring around it instead of a heavy orange glow.
    • Every panel closes with the same small "✕ Esc" button in its top corner.
    • Check boxes, switches and sliders are redrawn so they stay sharp at any screen size.
    • Names over people's heads no longer pile up: when two overlap, the one farther away fades out until there's room. A resting character's "resting · call up" line is smaller and only shows when you're close.
    • The place name, the controls strip and your coins sit on dark tags, so they're easy to read on the bright plaza floor and the sky. On a hunt, the controls list moved below the monster's health bar.
    • The Getting Started and Today cards are more solid, so signs and names behind them don't show through.
  65. Version 0.15.0

    Team attacks

    • Two heroes of different classes can now combine their skills into one big team attack. There are six, one for every pair of Warrior, Ranger, Mage and Normie (advanced jobs count as their branch): - Sunshower: the Warrior's shield launches the Ranger into the sky, and arrows rain down on the monster's back. - Bonfire: the Mage sets the Warrior's blade alight, and it erupts in a ring of fire. - High Dive: the Normie springs off the Warrior's shield and lands bat-first on the monster's back. - Skyflower: the Mage tosses up a seed of light, the Ranger shoots it, and it bursts like a firework, dazzling the monster. - Crosswind: two dashes from either side cross under the monster in an X. The heaviest stagger of all. - Turnip Fastball: the Mage conjures a giant turnip and the Normie hits it out of the park. The pieces heal your party.
    • When your skill and a nearby partner's are both ready, the team attack shows next to your abilities. Press T (R3 on a gamepad), and your partner presses it too within a second and a half. Called-up characters join in by themselves, and they'll ask you too.
    • Both of you dash into place, time slows for a beat, and one huge hit lands with its name over the number.
    • Both skills go on cooldown, and your party waits 30 seconds before the next one.
    • It works in online co-op too.
    • The Hunt Board lists the team attacks your party can do. The ones you haven't done yet show as "???" until you try them.
  66. Version 0.14.1

    Getting Started keeps up

    • Selling to Pip or crafting at Pip's now ticks Getting Started right away, instead of waiting until you leave Start Plaza and come back.
  67. Version 0.14.0

    Who's online

    • Press Tab (View on a gamepad) wherever you can walk around to see who's online and where they are: Start Plaza, their Home Farm, a community world, out on a hunt, or still on the summer island. It's in the Esc menu too.
    • Go to takes you to them: into the same part of Start Plaza, right next to them (even when it's busy), or to the community world they're in. If they're on a hunt or at their farm, you'll meet them in Start Plaza when they're back.
    • Invite asks them to your party from wherever they are.
    • Star a friend to pin them to the top of the list, and get a heads-up when they log on.
    • The summer island now shows how many people are online, your starred friends, and a button to go to them.
    • Want some quiet? Settings, then Online, then Appear offline keeps you off everyone's list.
  68. Version 0.13.5

    Jump

    • Press Space to jump (A on a gamepad) on the summer island, in Start Plaza, on your Home Farm and in community worlds. In hunts, Space is still dodge.
    • It's a quick, springy hop with a crouch to land on, and you can steer in the air just like running.
    • Everyone sees you jump, and every size jumps its own way: small ones bounce, large ones land with a thump. Ears, tails and tabards flop when you land.
    • Typing a space in chat never jumps. On a bench, Space stands you up.
    • You can hop up onto the plaza benches and stand on the seat.
  69. Version 0.13.4

    Friendlier chat

    • The plaza chat greets you without the fine print, and tells you how many other players are around in plain words.
    • Chat is easier to read: light text on a soft dark backing instead of blue on the blue sky.
  70. Version 0.13.3

    Easier to get around

    • Every panel in the plaza and on the farm closes the way you opened it: press E again (or B on a gamepad), or Esc as before. The same press never pops it straight back open.
    • Under an open panel your F-keys, V and the D-pad stay quiet, so browsing Pip's shelves doesn't make you dance or change your style.
    • The Wardrobe has a way back: ✕ or Esc returns you to the plaza with nothing changed. It's called the Wardrobe now too, and its button says Done.
    • Esc lets go of your name in the creator, and closes Settings on the title screen.
    • In a hunt, the menu holds your hero still: clicking Resume no longer swings your sword. Clicking away from party chat closes it, like in the plaza.
    • Gamepads can drive the menus: A presses a button, B backs out, and the first press lands you on a panel's buttons. The intro pages with any button, and Start skips it.
    • Key hints follow your controls everywhere, including climbing, reviving, fishing and Pip's turnips. A gamepad button in the plaza no longer trips over the invite key.
    • The controls strip lists everything (interact, menu, the gamepad too) and sits on a dark backing, so it's readable on the bright plaza floor. Chat text has a stronger outline for the same reason.
    • Smaller fixes: "3 turnip seeds", not "3 turnip seed". The fishing card no longer overlaps the chat box. "Start the hunt" is the bright button on the Hunt Board. The creator's Call-up page fits its panel.
  71. Version 0.13.2

    Shots that fly true

    • Spells and arrows no longer dive into the ground when you fire without locking on. Shots fly level where you're facing, and if a monster is roughly in front of you, they go for it.
    • The crosshair is easier to see: a white dot with a dark rim.
  72. Version 0.13.1

    Out of the chat box

    • You can always get out of the plaza chat box now: press Esc, press Enter on an empty line, or click anywhere in the world.
    • Typing in chat never moves your character. A "w" in your message stays in your message.
  73. Version 0.13.0

    Small, medium or large

    • Pick your size in the character creator: small, medium or large. Small is a chibi about half as tall as everyone else, with a big head, and large is a head taller and broad in the shoulders.
    • Any size goes with any race and any style. A classic pairing is pixel small, low-poly medium and anime large, but it's up to you.
    • Everyone sees you at your size, in the plaza, on the farm and in hunts. Characters from before this update are medium.
    • Every size runs at the same speed and hits just as hard. Small legs simply take quicker steps.
    • On the plaza benches, small characters sit on the edge and swing their legs, and large ones sit with their knees up.
    • The camera follows your size: lower and closer for small, higher and farther back for large. Name tags, chat bubbles and climbing onto monsters fit each size too.
    • The generated rabbit (Settings → Prototypes) is medium only for now, so small and large rabbits use the regular rabbit.
  74. Version 0.12.0

    New proportions

    • Characters get new, taller proportions, after our concept art: longer arms and legs, a smaller head, broader shoulders and more muscle. Everyone now stands about seven and a half heads tall.
    • Humans, Dogs and Rabbits all change, in all three styles, and every hairstyle, hat, outfit and weapon comes along.
    • The generated rabbit (Settings → Prototypes) now fits the new body, so it sits on benches properly and its arms hang straight.
    • Benches are a touch taller to match the longer legs, and name tags sit a little lower, just above the tallest ears.
  75. Version 0.11.6

    Try the new rabbit

    • New in Settings → Prototypes: Generated rabbit. Turn it on and every Rabbit you see, yours and everyone else's, draws as a new, more detailed rabbit from our concept art, standing up on its toes.
    • It works in all three styles and keeps your fur and outfit colors, your weapon, every move, sitting on benches, head turns and bouncing ears.
    • Hats and outfit pieces don't show on it yet; the character creator says so while it's on.
    • It's off by default and only changes what you see. Other players see you however their own setting says.
  76. Version 0.11.5

    Ears, tails and tabards

    • Rabbit ears bounce: they tip forward when you stop short, lean into a turn and spring back up.
    • Dog ears and tails move too. Floppy ears flap as you run, and tails flick with every stride.
    • The rabbit's tabard flaps swing with the legs and trail on a turn, and ponytails swing behind you and bounce when you land.
    • Pixel characters do all of this in their own sprite steps.
  77. Version 0.11.4

    Every hit counts

    • In co-op hunts, the end-of-hunt scoreboard now includes the hits your friends took in the last moments of the fight. Before, a late hit could go missing from the host's tally.
  78. Version 0.11.3

    Feet on the ground

    • On the island's hill and beach, feet now land on the ground instead of floating above it or sinking into it. Knees bend, hips settle, and feet tilt to match the slope.
  79. Version 0.11.2

    Characters move more naturally

    • Characters move more naturally. Standing around, walking, running, sprinting, sitting and dancing now use real motion: weight shifts, swinging arms, a lean into the run.
    • Hold sprint in a hunt and your character breaks into a real sprint instead of a sped-up run.
    • Feet keep pace with the ground, so running no longer skates.
    • Waving and cheering keep the new relaxed stance underneath.
    • Benches are a little taller, to fit the new way everyone sits.
    • Resting characters in Start Plaza stroll instead of jogging.
  80. Version 0.11.1

    Heads up

    • When someone nearby talks, waves or dances, the people around them turn to look for a moment. So does your own character.
    • In a hunt, everyone keeps an eye on the monster, even mid-swing.
    • Pixel characters turn their heads in sprite steps, just like the rest of their animation.
  81. Version 0.11.0

    The Lanternhorn

    • A second hunt: the Lanternhorn, a giant summer beetle with a glowing paper lantern on its back. Pick it or the Thornback on the Hunt Board.
    • It chases. Keep your distance and it rampages after you, lunge after lunge, each one with its own lane on the ground. Run too far and it takes off, hovers over you with its landing circle underneath, and drops.
    • Its lantern is the weak point. When it dives, its horn sticks in the ground for a moment: climb on and hit the lantern. When it's hurt, the lantern blazes and it gets meaner.
    • Its home is Lantern Grove: a clearing in an old oak grove at sunset, strung with festival lanterns, full of fireflies and crickets.
    • New material, Lantern Shell (Pip pays 60), and a new look to craft from five of them: the Lantern Horns, a headband with a forked beetle horn and a little lantern, in your accent color.
    • Today's hunt chore is now "Help win a hunt": either monster counts.
  82. Version 0.10.2

    The plaza dresses to match

    • Start Plaza's portals, stalls, benches and mirror now belong in OZ too: glossy white shapes with colored bands, little gem studs and rainbow pixel tiles, like the totem.
    • The three portals are OZ rings in their own colors, with a slowly turning emblem inside you can see through.
    • Pip's Produce and the Market booths get white dome canopies with hanging orbs, and their goods are on show: leafy turnips, fish and seeds.
    • The Wardrobe is a tall oval mirror ringed with colored bulbs, and its glass reflects the sky.
    • The benches are white with a colored seat edge, on legs shaped like the floating cones. You still sit side by side, just like before.
    • Everything stays where it was: same spots, same signs, same buttons.
  83. Version 0.10.1

    Something in the system

    • Settings has a new Prototypes section. Turn on "Hook intro" to try an experimental opening when you press Play. Tell us what you think!
  84. Version 0.10.0

    A new Start Plaza

    • Start Plaza is rebuilt in the spirit of OZ from Summer Wars: a vast white floor that mirrors a painted blue sky, all the way out to a glitchy red edge on the horizon.
    • A towering white totem stands over the plaza, so you can find the center from anywhere: a flower of colored discs, banded orbs, a whale-mouthed dome with a big round eye, spinning discs, angel wings, and a horn with a halo.
    • A rainbow mosaic ring floats around its base, spinning tops hover around the plaza, and OZ icons drift through the sky.
    • Settings → Reduce flashing keeps the glitch effects still. The gentle motion stays.
  85. Version 0.9.1

    Stamps forever

    • The stamp card never runs out: after the Start Halo, every 10 stamps brings a Summer Gift.
    • Today's chores now change at 4 am Pacific (7 am Eastern), not in the middle of the afternoon.
  86. Version 0.9.0

    Today's chores

    • Every day brings three small chores, on the new Today card in Start Plaza: things like watering a crop, selling to Pip, catching a fish, helping beat the Thornback or sitting down next to someone. Just play and they tick themselves off.
    • Each one pays 25 coins and a Summer Stamp. Stamps never expire. Fill your stamp card for turnip seeds at 3, the new Summer Visor at 10, and the Start Halo at 25.
    • No streaks and nothing to lose: skip a day and tomorrow just brings new chores.
  87. Version 0.8.1

    Talk during hunts

    • Chat with your party mid-hunt: press Enter, type, Enter to send. Messages pop up over your head too, so "Help!" gets seen.
  88. Version 0.8.0

    Shopkeepers and Anglers

    • The Farmer has two new jobs. Press 5 in the plaza or at your farm to switch: Farmer, Shopkeeper, Angler.
    • Shopkeepers run a stall at the new Market, past Pip's in Start Plaza. Stock it with turnips, fish or scales and set your price. Other players buy from it even while you're away, and you'll hear what sold when you're back. Pip also pays Shopkeepers 10% more.
    • Anglers get a better rod: more time to strike when a fish bites, Glimmer Carp more often, and a rare catch only Anglers ever see, the Rainbow Koi.
    • Anglers can grill fish at the farm's new campfire. In a hunt, grilled fish heals a little and makes you Well Fed: 10% more damage for 30 seconds. G eats it before a turnip.
  89. Version 0.7.0

    Rabbits

    • A new race: Rabbit. Tall ears with darker tips, a hare's muzzle and whiskers, a fluffy tail and long bare paws, in all three styles.
    • Rabbits wear their own martial outfit: a sleeveless mandarin-collar top, a wrapped sash, knee-length tabard flaps, capri trousers, and cloth wraps at the wrists and ankles. Recolor it like any outfit.
    • New swatches for everyone: snow-white fur, grey for hair and ear tips, a slate-blue trim and grey trousers.
  90. Version 0.6.4

    Have a seat

    • Start Plaza has benches. Walk up and press E to sit down, sit next to a friend, and everyone sees you hanging out. Move to get up.
  91. Version 0.6.3

    Bolder pixel edges

    • Pixel-style characters have a bolder, consistent 2-pixel outline, like hand-drawn pixel art.
  92. Version 0.6.2

    A better mix

    • Music plays at the same loudness everywhere (the title and plaza theme was much quieter than the rest), the island's waves are easier to hear, and big fights no longer distort.
  93. Version 0.6.1

    Sound from the start

    • Music now plays from the title screen and through the character creator.
    • The island sounds like an island: waves on the shore and seabirds overhead.
  94. Version 0.6.0

    Our own icon

    • Worldstart has its own app icon: the rainbow Start rings on a summer sky.
    • No more engine logo when the game launches. It opens straight onto the title screen.
  95. Version 0.5.3

    Steadier Windows updates

    • A fix to how the Windows version restarts itself after an update.
  96. Version 0.5.2

    The killing blow

    • Bringing down the Thornback now hits like it should: a white flash, a big shake, and a second of slow motion before the victory.
  97. Version 0.5.1

    Sea to the horizon

    • The island's sea now runs all the way to the horizon, with no edge when you look out from the beach or the hill.
  98. Version 0.5.0

    A new summer island

    • The world before you log in is a brand-new island: a sandy beach, palm trees, a grassy hill with shade trees and flowers, a little beach camp, and a bright summer sea all around. Walk around, then step through the Start ring.
    • The download is about 40 MB smaller.
  99. Version 0.4.12

    Feel the hits

    • Taking a hit flashes the edges of the screen red, harder for bigger hits. With Reduce flashing on, it's a soft tint instead.
  100. Version 0.4.11

    Going down, getting up

    • When you go down in a hunt, the world drains of color and the screen tells you a friend can revive you. When they do, the color floods back.
  101. Version 0.4.10

    An entrance

    • The Thornback makes an entrance: its name fills the screen, it roars, the ground shakes, and its health bar fills up as the fight begins.
  102. Version 0.4.9

    A new opening

    • The opening story now moves from a stormy night to a summer afternoon as you read, one line at a time, until Worldstart's colors rise in.
  103. Version 0.4.8

    Fishing, tidied

    • Fishing has its own little card: the bite and the catch pop, the tension meter flashes when the line's about to snap, and the button prompts match your controller.
  104. Version 0.4.7

Fix: messages one word per line

    • Fixed messages in the farm and plaza showing one word per line down the middle of the screen. Long messages wrap neatly now, and "press E" prompts fit their text.
  105. Version 0.4.6

    A cleaner plaza screen

    • In Start Plaza and the farm: your coins and items show as neat chips, Getting Started is a card with a progress bar and checkmarks, messages pop up as tidy pills, and "press E" prompts stand out.
    • The controls strip tucks away after your first couple of visits (press H to bring it back).
  106. Version 0.4.5

    Tidier menus

    • Settings is organized into Audio, Controls, Display and Accessibility, with values shown as you slide and switches for on/off options.
    • The in-hunt menu dims the fight behind it, and leaving a hunt takes a second press so you don't abandon your party by accident.
  107. Version 0.4.4

    A proper victory

    • The end of a hunt is an occasion now: the scene dims, "Victory" lands, your coins count up, new looks get their own card, and the party scoreboard rolls in row by row with the MVP in gold.
  108. Version 0.4.3

    A sharper HUD

    • New hunt HUD: the Thornback's health bar shows big hits as a chunk that drains away, your abilities are cards that light up when ready, and your party shows as clean little frames.
    • Your health shows its numbers and pulses red when you're low.
    • Menus in Start Plaza now fit on screen and scroll when they're long, like Pip's shop.
  109. Version 0.4.2

A new look for menus and the character creator

    • Menus got a makeover: a new typeface, chunkier buttons that respond when you point at them, soft click sounds, and panels that fit on screen.
    • The character creator is organized into tabs (Look, Colors, Gear, Call-up), with round color swatches that show what you've picked, your style highlighted on the stage, and a summer meadow behind it.
  110. Version 0.4.1

    A new title screen

    • A new title screen: a sunny meadow with the Start rings floating over it, and a simpler menu.
  111. Version 0.4.0

    Updates itself

    • The game now updates itself. When a new version is out, it downloads it at startup, installs it and restarts, so you're always on the latest. (This version you'll still need to download once.)
  112. Version 0.3.9

    A cleaner screen

    • The controls list shows for your first two hunts, then tucks away (press H to bring it back).
    • Quick flurries of hits now add up into one number that pops, instead of a pile you can't read.
  113. Version 0.3.8

    A real meadow

    • The Thornback's meadow is a meadow now: tall grass that sways in the wind around the fight, and short grass where you fight, so you can still see every attack coming.
  114. Version 0.3.7

    Richer light

    • Summer looks more like summer: warmer sun, richer color and soft contact shadows where feet, rocks and the Thornback meet the ground.
    • New in Settings: Graphics High or Low. Low runs faster on laptops and older graphics cards.
  115. Version 0.3.6

    Smoother glows

    • Fixed blocky squares on the ground around heroes with an Ultimate active. Their glow now fades smoothly.
  116. Version 0.3.5

Let your AI agent tune your call-up

    • Settings has a new "Copy agent key" button. Paste what it copies to your AI agent, and it can check how your call-up companion is doing and change how it fights: cautious or aggressive, and who it protects. The key can't do anything else.
  117. Version 0.3.4

    In the Thornback's shadow

    • Pixel-style heroes now darken when they stand in the shadow of the Thornback or a friend, just like everyone else.
  118. Version 0.3.3

    Eye shapes

    • Pick an eye shape in the character creator: Round, Sharp or Sleepy. They're drawn for all three styles, and they're free.
  119. Version 0.3.2

    Anime faces

    • Anime-style faces got proper lash lines and a little nose. They match your skin color, whatever it is.
  120. Version 0.3.1

    A clear view

    • The island's first view is now a sunny clearing with the Start ring, the lake and the mountains, not a tree trunk.
  121. Version 0.3.0

A summer island before you log in

    • The download now starts in the real world: a summer island with a beach, woods and big skies. Walk around as long as you like, then step through the Start ring to log in to Worldstart.
  122. Version 0.2.2

    Dog ears

    • Dogs get to choose too: Pointy, Floppy or Fluffy ears in the character creator, free. Dog faces also got some soft cheek fur.
  123. Version 0.2.1

    New hairstyles

    • Four hairstyles for humans in the character creator: Tousled, Ponytail, Bob and Spiky. Each one is drawn for all three styles, and they're free.
  124. Version 0.2.0

Eight jobs and a busier plaza

    • All eight combat jobs are here: Dread Knight, Druid, Light Mage, Dark Mage, Guardian and Hacker join Paladin and Ninja. Press a class key twice to switch to its jobs.
    • Start Plaza feels alive even when your friends are offline: their characters hang out between hunts. Walk up to one to call them up for a hunt.
    • Paladin's Unbreakable and Ninja's Shadow Guard now protect friends in online hunts too, and so do heals, Rootbind, Debug and Mind Break.
    • Anime-style hair got a glow-up: real bangs, side locks and shine.
    • Pixel-style characters now step into the shade of trees and houses.
    • Crowded plazas run much smoother.
    • New players get a short intro to the world before making a character.
    • Windows download.
    • Play with a gamepad: Xbox and PlayStation controllers work in hunts, Start Plaza and menus, and button prompts follow whatever you last touched.
    • Monster attack warnings are easier to read, including for colorblind players: a bright outline shows the whole danger zone right away, and stripes fill it as the attack winds up.
    • First hunt? Short tips pop up the moment you need them: dodging, climbing, reviving and healing up. Once each, never again.
    • "Hunt again" after a win or a wipe: same party, fresh Thornback, no trip back to the board.
    • After a hunt, see the whole party's damage, healing and revives, with an MVP (healers count!).
    • Two new looks to craft at Pip's: the Angler's Cap (for patient fishers) and the Harvest Wreath (for farmers who grew a lot of turnips).
    • Pip has opinions now: about your haul, your hat, and the state of the turnip shelf.
    • Settings: music and sound volume, camera sensitivity, invert Y, screen shake and a reduce-flashing option, from the menu (Esc or Start).
  125. Version 0.1.0

    First playtest build

    • Meet up in Start Plaza: chat, emotes, a hunt board, Pip's shop and a wardrobe. A Getting Started checklist shows you around.
    • Pick your look in the character creator: Human or Dog, in pixel, low-poly or anime style. Every style shares the same world.
    • Hunt the Thornback with up to four friends, or fill the party with called-up characters. Dodge its telegraphs, break its stagger, and climb it to hit the crystal on its back.
    • Four classes to play: Warrior, Ranger, Mage and Normie, each with a skill and an Ultimate. Two advanced jobs, Paladin and Ninja, bring the Unbreakable and Shadow Guard Ultimates.
    • Grow turnips on your home farm and sell them at Pip's. Hunters buy them back to heal mid-fight, so farmers keep the hunters going.
    • A Thornback pup likes to bother your farm. Post a bounty and a hunter will chase it off.
    • Fish in the farm pond, and craft cosmetics from hunt materials.
    • Visit Friend's Island, the first community-hosted world, drawn entirely in pixel art.
    • Press Esc for a menu anywhere, and the interface scales to big and high-res screens.
    • The game also plays fully offline.
